How do I improve and progress in Karate/Kickboxing?

Training in the ECKA is split into Basic, Intermediate and Advanced stages upon a formal grading syllabus. During training for your first 3 belts (Basic) you will be taught the initial punches, kick and blocks. The Intermediate stage continues with the next 4 belts which will introduce more partner work, advanced basics (initial spinning techniques) and light sparing. The Advanced stage is from the 8th belt upwards (brown), where you will learn advanced techniques in sparing and partner work, plus freeforms/katas.

As long as your technical proficiency develops suitably during the first five belts you can take a grading every three months. Once green / purple belt has been achieved, with the rising standards and advanced techniques, it can be more appropriate that gradings are taken once every six months. Once 1st Kyu has been achieved (brown belt with one stripe), 6 months must pass before you can attempt to gain your full 1st Dan Black belt.

When you pass a grade you are marked between A and D, C- being the lowest pass possible. The average pass mark is C+, however Tring Kickboxing's average pass mark is B-.

There is no easy way to gain your black belt. It takes time, dedication and effort, but the rewards and sense of accomplishment are second to none. On average it will take between 4 to 5 years to attain your 1st Dan Black belt and any other association offering to 'fast-track' you to black belt is offering you a poor level of instruction and guidance.
